It was a clear situation in the lead of the relay races at the conclusion of the 27^th Junior World Orienteering Championships in the Engadin. Switzerland took gold medals #6 and #7. Both the women’s and the men’s team with anchor runners and double world junior champions Joey Hadorn and Simona Aebersold were running in a dominant manner to gold.

Simona Aebersold (Switzerland) captured her second title in an outstanding manner at the Junior World Orienteering Championships in Switzerland in a distinctly demanding middle distance race. After winning two silver medals in the sprint and the long distance, Thomas Curiger crowned his impressive JWOC-performance with gold. With 10 individual medals the hosting country is already deemed the dominating nation at these 27^th Junior World Orienteering Championships in the Lower Engadin.

With Olli Ojanaho (FIN), Joey Hadorn (SUI) and Isac von Krusenstierna (SWE) the three top favourites won their qualification races over the middle distance in Ftan.

On the women’s side, the two Swiss Valerie Aebischer and Simona Aebersold as well as the Swede Johanna Öberg won their respective heats. Team Norway and Switzerland succeeded in placing all their runners into the A-Final, whereas for the two other big orienteering nations, Finland and Sweden, 3 competitors failed to clear the hurdle qualifying.

No new names on the podium for the men at their title races over the long distance: both Swiss, Joey Hadorn and Thomas Curiger won gold and silver. As on the previous day, bronze went to the Swede Isac von Krusenstierna. On the junior women’s side, the Finn Anna Haataja won her first gold medal ever in front of the two Swiss, Valérie Aebischer and Sophie Bachmann. The Swiss dominated both first days at the Junior World Orienteering Championships in their own country.

Simona Aebersold and Joey Hadorn are the winners of the opening race of JWOC2016 in Scuol. The two Swiss were crowning the dominating home team with their performances. Simona Aebersold, only 18 years old, secured her second world title with an extraordinary lead of 52 seconds. A double Swiss win was achieved on the men’s side through Joey Hadorn (19) and Thomas Curiger (20). With six runners in the first six places the Swiss orienteering top athletes also confirmed their dominant position in this short discipline in the highest junior class.

Favourites and Terrain of the Sprint in Scuol on 10 July 2016.

On Thursday July 14th after the Middle Distance Prize Giving Ceremony, JWOC 2016 will be holding an "Open Mic and Talent Show Contest"!
Come show us your talent! Will a medal winner also show his/her talent on stage? What about all those volunteers or many a local Scuol resident?

The JWOC week starts traditionally with the Opening Ceremony where all the teams and hopefully many fans will come together in Scuol. The Opening Ceremony awaits with some spectacular videos of the terrain and messages from top orienteers from all over the world. The highlight will be the first live performance of the JWOC-Song by Swedish singer and songwriter Emma Sundvall.

Olli Ojanaho born on 25 February 1997 lives in Rovaniemi and is a club member of Ounasvaaran Hiihtoseura. He won 3 gold medals at JWOC 2015 at the age of only 18. Olli has dominated EYOC (European Youth Orienteering Championships) by taking medals at every start for the last three years with a total of 9 medals (6 x gold, 2 x silver, 1 bronze).

After several visits in May and the beginning of June the course setters and map makers finalized their work: maps and courses are ready for JWOC 2016! Especially the area of Val Müstair had still a lot of snow in May, so map makers and course setters had a hard job looking for the control markings from last summer. But they succeeded!

The agile ibex (capra ibex) are moving quickly in the mountains high above Scuol in the same way orienteers do. The ibex disappeared around 1650 from the Grisons. People believed in the miraculous healing powers of the compounds from the ibex which determined its fate to almost extinction.

Anine Ahlsand born 25 September 1996, lives in Trondheim and is a club member of Nydalens. She won her very first gold medal at JWOC 2015 in the middle distance.

Simone Aebersold born 13 April 1998, lives in Brügg and is a club member of ol.biel.seeland (SUI) and Tampereen Pyrintö (FIN) and won the sprint gold medal at JWOC 2015. Simona is the daughter of Christian Aebersold, three times relay gold medal winner for Switzerland in 1991, 1993 and 1995.

Simon Hector born on 12 July 1997, lives in Huddinge (Stockholm) and Sandviken (at the orienteering high school until June) and is a club member of Snättringe SK. He won three JWOC medals so far (silver long and bronze relay 2015, gold relay 2014) and 14 Swedish Junior/Youth Championship gold medals.

Anna Haataja born 20 January 1996, lives in Oulu and is a club member of SK Pohjantähti and won the silver medal at JWOC 2015 in the long distance which was her greatest success so far.

Karoliina Ukskoski born on 27 August 1996 lives in Perho and is a club member of Perhon Kiri and won a bronze medal at JWOC 2015 in the sprint.
