Rocky Middle Distance Qualification in Ftan, 13 July 2016

The pre-start is in a magnificent alpine landscape. However, distraction is inappropriate here as technically and physically challenging courses will continuously demand the utmost concentration requiring precision and flexibility. The terrain is on a broken-up hill-side with areas of detailed contours and rocky features, as well as pine and spruce forests and small open areas and few marshes.

The Finn, Oli Ojanaho (19) had won 2015 in Norway both the long and the middle distance title. In this event again, he will be challenged by the Swedes Simon Hector (19) and Isac von Krusenstierna (18) and the two Swiss Joey Hadorn and Thomas Curiger who are the favourites as well. Defending champion Anine Ahlsand (20) did not made the Norwegian selections. Therefore the new Long Distance champion Anna Haataja (Finland) and Sprint winner Simona Aebersold (Switzerland) will be the top favourites.

The goal for all big orienteering nations is to succeed in qualifying as much as possible of their athletes for the A-Final. Which of these nations will stumble with that tricky orienteering challenge?
