Meet the Heraldic Animal of the Canton of Grisons!

The agile ibex (capra ibex) are moving quickly in the mountains high above Scuol in the same way orienteers do. The ibex disappeared around 1650 from the Grisons. People believed in the miraculous healing powers of the compounds from the ibex which determined its fate to almost extinction.

At the beginning of the 20th century the Italian king Vittorio Emanuele III succeeded in smuggling a few of the last ibex to Switzerland. Thereupon, an animal park started with a worldwide unique breeding program. Today, almost 20’000 ibex are roaming again in the Swiss Alps.

Who knows? Maybe, you will inadvertently choose a bad, longer route choice and happen to run into a proud ibex in the long distance race in Val Müstair?
